I love Thanksgiving. The turkey, the pie, and the Purina National Dog Show! (I used to include the Macy’s Day Parade, but let’s face it; that’s become one long commercial for crappy movies and singing groups.)

What’s Thanksgiving without hosts John O’Hurley and expert commentator David Frei giving us the play by play on our favorite dogs?

The NBC Thanksgiving Day TV special (Noon – 2 p.m. in all times zones) will be complemented by video of the group judging of all 160-plus breeds at www.NationalDogShow.com. The online video will include six new AKC-recognized breeds with expert commentary from veteran announcer and dog show expert Wayne Ferguson. The online coverage will also feature TV personality Mary Carillo, who will provide separate on-site features and interviews from the show.

Also on Thanksgiving Day, NBC and 4mm Games is introducing a social game for dog lovers on Facebook and other digital platforms. “Dog Show Friends” will be a virtual community in which participants can adopt, nurture and train puppies while interacting with other dogs and owners and being rewarded for responsible pet ownership. The game can be accessed via www.facebook.com/nationaldogshow and at  www.dogshowfriends.com.

And if you can’t catch the show on television today (I hear there’s football on or something like that), have no fear. It will also be available beginning Friday, Nov. 26, on Hulu.com.

Over here, we’re having our own dog show of sorts. Last night, while I was baking, Bandit licked all of the pie crust shells. This morning, he shredded a roll of paper towel. And while I was using the blender to chop cranberries and oranges, he sang me a lovely song I’ll call “Mommy! That’s A Big Scary Noise!”

This Saturday is the 13th annual Barktober Fest at Lollypop Farm, the time when thousands of people head out to Egypt, NY for games, events, a 5K, nature walk, dog training demonstrations, tours of the shelter and lots, lots more.

It’s a big woofing great time!

You can still register for the 5k. Just head over to Medved Running & Walking Outfitters in Pittsford today, Friday, 9/24,  from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. You can also register the day of the race. The first 150 runners, or those that raise a minimum of $ 50, will receive a long-sleeved t-shirt.

And when you head over to the festival, make sure you bring your own pup along. This is a totally dog-friendly event! (Just make sure your dog can handle the festival activity – there are noises and kids and lots of other dogs. Not a great place for dogs who are noise sensitive or anxious in crowds.)

For more information, visit Lollypop Farm’s website.

Pat McNeely and his four-legged best buddy Koda celebrate as the Grand Prize Winner of the Beneful WagWorld Dream Dog Park Contest.

Pat McNeely and his dog Koda are the big winners in the Beneful WagWorld Dream Dog Park Contest, winning a $ 500,000 renovation of the Newtown Dog Park in Johns Creek, GA.

The first-of-its-kind contest invited dog owners across America to answer the question: If you had $ 500,000 to create the ultimate dream dog park for you and your best buddy, what would you do? In addition to submitting a video that showed the many creative ways they would create their dream dog park, contest entrants were asked to write a short essay explaining how the makeover of a neighborhood dog park would enhance their daily adventures with their dog.

McNeely’s’s design will serve as the inspiration for the dog park makeover, which will include a climbing structure, plastic tunnels, a doggie splash pad, lots of grass and shade trees, and running trails. In addition to the dog park makeover, McNeely won $ 5,000 cash and a year’s supply of Beneful brand dog food. You can read more in the press release.

And in Rochester, be sure to check out the Greece Canal Dog Park. It may not have tunnels and climbing structures, but it’s a great place to let your dog romp around with his canine friends. You need to have a registration tag for your dogs, so check out the park website for more information and park hours.
